The Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre (SUHRC) is a 300 bedded healthcare facility that is located in the Lavale campus of the Symbiosis International (Deemed University) (SIU), providing healthcare facilities to this underserved part of the state. The surrounding area is semi-urban with approximately 32 villages being located within a 12 kilometres radius.
Symbiosis has been providing local community services through the Symbiosis Community Outreach Programme and Extension (SCOPE)for many years now. We plan to continue and enhance these services through the hospital.
The SUHRC is a tertiary care hospital with all the basic specialities as well as select super specialities like Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Neurology. There will be a total of 22 ICU beds including 6 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds and 6 dialysis beds. Our facilities include the latest MRI, CT scanner and Cathlab (angiography/ angioplasty) machines, state-of-the-art 5 operation theatres, Laboratory equipment, Blood bank and a 24 x7 Pharmacy. There are 100 general ward beds and another 650 will be added soon as part of the medical college hospital in the same campus. We hope to provide subsidised but quality care to this socioeconomic class.
The doctors will be employed on a full time basis, so as to ensure 24x 7 delivery of quality care. The 15 departments will have at least 2 consultant doctors each, an initial strength of 30 medical officers and 100 nurses. The schedule of charges is expected to be approximately 20 to 30 % lower than the corporate hospitals in Pune. All government health schemes shall be available at our hospital in the near future. All TPAs and insurance companies will be empanelled shortly as well.
In addition to patient care, there will be an emphasis on Research and enhancing related capabilities. The proximity of sister institutes like Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), Symbiosis Centre for Medical Imaging Analysis (SCMIA), Symbiosis Centre for Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (SCNN), Symbiosis Centre for Stem cell Research (SCSR), Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences (SSBS) and Symbiosis School of Sports Sciences (SSSS) will facilitate this endeavour.
We hope to integrate low cost healthcare with cutting edge technology and research so as to be able to deliver the best in the healthcare domain to an underserved and impoverished population.
Symbiosis International (Deemed University) offers medical facilities for all its students and teaching and non-teaching staff through Symbiosis Centre of Health Care (SCHC). Symbiosis International (Deemed) University (SIU) started the Symbiosis Community Outreach Programme and Extension (SCOPE) on July 2, 2012, with the primary objective of positively impacting the communities surrounding the University. The program aims to empower the local community to identify and promote their own health initiatives while also taking proactive, community-driven actions in the socio-economic, environmental, and education domains in a sustainable manner.
Its mission is to facilitate the sustainable, holistic, and integrated development of the identified villages situated in the Mulshi taluka of Pune district. A total of 22 villages were initially selected for the implementation of the program, which has now been increased to 35 villages, having approximately 28% of the Mulshi block population.
SIU is committed to the principles of ― ‘Health for All’. SCOPE is presently implementing SIU’s mandate of Health Promotion University (HPU), i.e. promotion of sustainable health within the wider community. This is an asset to the university staff, students, and to the communities in which they are located, and to the wider society where these students will eventually assume professional roles.
To realize these goals, the SCOPE Healthcare team conducts primary health check-ups, at the selected villages as per the fixed daily schedule. It undertakes a range of initiatives beyond the Outpatient Department (OPD) and referral services, which include Health Awareness campaigns, Health Promotion activities, Personal and Social Development programs, Institutional Social Responsibility projects, Service Learning opportunities, and the creation of a Healthy Environment. These efforts also involve building strong connections with the community and conducting academic and action research in collaboration with the community.
The beneficiaries of these initiatives encompass individuals of all age groups and genders, including expectant and postnatal mothers (ANC & PNC), breastfeeding mothers, children, older adults, and adolescents. Annually, access to community healthcare is extended to approximately 80,000 to 100,000 beneficiaries, especially those residing in remote, underserved, and hard-to-reach areas. The SCOPE team not only provides valuable experiential learning opportunities for students from Symbiosis sister institutes but also for international students who engage with the villages through Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) and gain insights into the prevalent health issues.
SCOPE is involved in spreading health awareness by actively conducting health education sessions in and around the villages selected. These initiatives center around areas like nutrition, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, vector-borne diseases, alcohol and tobacco deaddiction, deworming, and organ donation. The topics are thoughtfully chosen based on the community's 'felt needs' and local health priorities. Up to now, SCOPE has effectively organized numerous programs with the collaboration of community members, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government stakeholders.
SIU is dedicated to advancing the sustainable development of a rural community through the effective strategy of 'community engagement.' This approach entails integrating local health systems and community resources into the planning and delivery of healthcare services. SIU actively partners with students, community members, and both governmental and non-governmental counterparts to execute a variety of initiatives. Partnerships with like-minded organizations and continued stakeholder involvement remain instrumental in guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of SCOPE initiatives in the field. The major examples of this are the provision of Wari Medical Aid for Warkaris and Bhima Koregaon health check-ups with Mrs. Sheela Raje Salve Trust, the provision of healthcare services to brick kiln migratory laborers and construction workers, etc.
SCOPE actively encourages and engages in community-based research initiatives. Faculty members, research officers, and students within SCOPE actively participate in research projects focusing on areas such as TB, Anaemia, Community Perceptions regarding SCOPE's Healthcare Services, Maternal Health, and Micronutrient Deficiency in Children and Women, among others.
