UL 94 Classification and Flame-Retardant Materials

Fire safety is an essential factor in the design and manufacturing of engineering plastic components. Understanding the UL 94 flammability rating helps specify the right material for enclosures, electrical housings, and industrial applications where thermal exposure is a real risk.

What Is the UL 94 Standard?

UL 94 is a plastics flammability standard published by Underwriters Laboratories. It measures how a material responds to a small, controlled flame — specifically how quickly it self-extinguishes, whether it drips while burning, and whether those drips can ignite material below it.

The standard assigns letter-and-number ratings such as HB, V-0, V-1, V-2, and 5VA, ordered roughly from least to most flame-resistant.

Common UL 94 Ratings Explained

  • HB — Slow horizontal burning; the baseline rating for general-purpose plastics.
  • V-2 — Vertical test, self-extinguishes but may drip flaming particles.
  • V-1 — Vertical test, self-extinguishes with no flaming drips.
  • V-0 — Strictest vertical rating; extinguishes within 10 seconds, no flaming drips.
  • 5VA — Withstands a higher-energy flame with no burn-through of the specimen.

Specifying flame class isn't optional for enclosure work — it's the difference between a part that meets code and one that gets rejected at inspection.

Choosing a Flame-Retardant Material
