How to Choose the Right Paper GSM for Your Packaging Lines

Kraft Paper Rolls Manufacturing
Key Takeaways for Packaging Buyers:
  • GSM (Grams per Square Metre) measures paper weight and thickness, but Burst Factor (BF) dictates structural strength.
  • For heavy-duty 5-ply shipping cartons, pairing 140 GSM Kraft liners with 120 GSM fluting medium yields optimum stackability.
  • Choosing the wrong GSM leads to box bulging during monsoon transport or overpaying for unnecessary paper weight.

One of the most frequent mistakes packaging procurement managers make when placing bulk paper orders is focusing solely on the price per ton without specifying the exact Grammage (GSM) and Burst Factor (BF) balance.

1. Understanding Grammage (GSM) vs Burst Factor (BF)

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre and defines the weight of a 1x1 metre sheet of paper. However, two 120 GSM Kraft paper reels can have dramatically different structural strengths based on their Burst Factor (BF).

Bursting strength is measured using a Mullen tester in kg/cm². The Burst Factor is calculated using the formula:

Burst Factor (BF) = (Bursting Strength in kg/cm² × 1000) / GSM

2. Recommended GSM Guidelines by Industry Application

Packaging Type Recommended Paper Grade Ideal GSM Range Target Burst Factor (BF)
Outer Shipping Cartons (5-Ply) Virgin Kraft Reel 140 – 180 GSM 22 – 32 BF
Inner Fluting Medium Corrugation Fluting Paper 100 – 120 GSM 18 – 20 BF
Garment & FMCG Boxes Duplex Board (Grey Back) 250 – 350 GSM Smooth Gloss Print
Food Wrapping & Liner Greaseproof Butter Paper 30 – 40 GSM FSSAI Certified

3. How Deckle Slitting Impacts Cost Efficiency

When ordering industrial paper reels from Rajshree Infinity, supplying your corrugator machine deckle width allows our mill team to slit reels with zero trim loss. This saves up to 8% on raw material wastage per container dispatch.
